It seems to have escaped your attention, but US Federal spending and economic policy is controlled by Congress, which was controlled entirely by Democrats from Jan 2007 to Jan 2011. Take a look at this chart to see how Federal spending jumped during this period:



Note: the spending for 2010 was even higher (same for discretionary, more for the entitlements) because the Democratic Congress couldn't be bothered to pass a Federal budget for FY 2011.

Cutting government spending to close the budget deficit would be bad for the economy like withholding a shot of Jack Daniels from an alcoholic. There is a short term downside to getting healthy, but to not do so would mean a quicker death.

I realize that such things are outside the range of most politicians who have the intellectual capacity and economic understanding of a moderately retarded flea (especially those on the left), but cutting consumption spending is clearly the right way to go.
