"They sold 50% less than expected."

What is too funny is your inability to do math. Like Kurthend said, no one was expecting iPad sales of 9.4 million, which is what your statement implies.

You'd be right, except they sold every iPad they could get out the door. You might more complain that they didn't plan to make enough, Or maybe they ran into production difficulties - they were having troubles with light leaks - and maybe Samsung was stiffing them on chips (wouldn't surprise me - I don't trust that outfit).

iPad 2 came out on March 2, giving it a whole month of the quarter. iPad 1 sales slowed in anticipation and Apple was selling out the channel for them - the remainders of which were sold at clearance prices after iPad2 came out - probably to mollify the prospective buyers because they couldn't get version 2 out fast enough.

You don't have to mention that I'm an apologist for them, because I know I am. But then I'm not apologizing for much. Am I? They had a killer quarter and iPad 2 sales are smoking anything running droid.
