I suspect this is bogus. We have used fluorescent lamps for over a half a century with no ill effects other than some people getting mercury poison. And those affected with mercury poisoning were almost all workers before more stringent safety standards were in place. CFL's have much less mercury even for their smaller size than the older fluorescent lamps.
