Another aspect of Banking being a "great business" is the fact that, more often than not, a country's government is very reluctant to let a bank fail as it often has a knock-on effect and causes a run at banks, in general.
This is especially the case with the larger ones.

So as we recently saw, banks had a large collection of junk in their assets. When the quality of that junk eventually became apparent and the fertilizer hit the fan, the banks cried "Help" and, in most cases, the government obliged with taxpayer's money.

So it seems, that in many cases, it's a "win-win" situation for many banks.
