So long as I get a latte at a discount thanks to that ad, yeah I may actually walk into the store and buy one. But if it is to "oh by the way, there is a Starbucks coming up" only, then I will pass. Not to turn this into a discussion, but IMO, companies should always try to lure customers with discounts - not just "advise us" of their products. Also to lure "existing" customers even more than "new" customers. When you register your SBUX gift card online, you get free things like syrup, free in house "coffee only" refills etc. Routinely we get emails for upcoming discounts. (ie 50% this or that). That appeals to me and we (as a family) will take advantage of those things. I am the main user but tend to keep my purchases isolated to coffee only. Lattes are some "rare bonus" IMO as they are neither good for my waste nor for my wallet. IMO -- SBUX will make more money by luring me to buy a latte (which will in turn they will have upsold me to buy a premium drink in the future) versus trying to lure in non-SBUX customers. We get ads occasionally for Second Cup here in my town, and they are for "buy one get one free" deals. But I don't go there. So it is of no use to me. Yet by providing us 1/2 price Ice Fraps - the kids get to try them, then while on vacation in the US, they aren't on sale, but yeah I ask if they want one and they do and we buy them. I am a HARD sell and yet that works for me. SBUX and APPL IMO have 100% figured out how to get customers to buy their products. If RIMM doesn't have Playbooks all over the place to play with in stores, good luck.
