Do not be locked into crude oil as the main energy source for transportation. Penetration of electric cars which will derive their electricity indirectly from solar energy is one of the solutions. Same with heating.

By indirect I mean renewable energy with all its facets. Keep in mind that solar radiation is around 1.35KW per square meter per day, so even at a net rate of 5% efficiency there is enough energy to go around.

The oceans are the biggest depositories of solar energy time will come and technology will solve the problem of extracting a small fraction of this energy which will supplant the hydrocarbons.

Deserts are already the targets of projects in the planning process of huge solar array with HVDC transmissions over extended distances.

Now this does not count on plasma generators which are presently posing substantial technological issues to be energy positive, and could supplant the nuclear reactors.
