HE seems to enjoy their position in Hawaii. Looking at their 10-K, using "competition" as a search term, I see a lot more references to their banking subsidiary, with a passing reference to self generated power.

...Competition. Although competition in the generation sector in Hawaii has been moderated by the scarcity of generation sites, various permitting processes and lack of interconnections to other electric utilities, HECO and its subsidiaries face competition from IPPs and customer self-generation, with or without cogeneration.

In October 2003, the PUC opened investigative proceedings on two specific issues (competitive bidding and DG) to move toward a more competitive electric industry environment under cost-based regulation.....

There is also a generation source table, that doesn't paste here very well. A fair amount of Big Island's power is unconventional, but the bulk of the power is for Oahu, and is oil-fired.

Nice yield on their common.....

The geothermal is there and it works but the State lets Helco cap the usage at 10 or 15% and then they only pay a pittance to the geo company and turn around and charge full boat to customers.

We had a massive winds storm a few months back that left 20k homes without power and Heco went on strike!
