Joel,
At some point all markets/companies reach saturation. However, you are saying growth of 11%. When? All research I read says the PC market in general is growing faster than that, and CPQ is taking share. Other than a guess, where are you getting your numbers and what do you base this on? Go to Compaq's home page and click on 'company information'. Once there, you can call up graphs on the company's financial position. Look at the graph on cash accumulation, for instance. You will see that it is accelerating, they have built up a couple billion in just the last few quarters. All signs point to the fact that things are speeding up, not slowing down. The company has NO debt and is printing cash. If you can't come up with anything other than 'theory', you don't really have much to go on. Are you willing to go short on your theory? Or do you have a short position in the stock?

John

Remember back in the early days of the auto industry, there were many small players. Some companies will just be able to make more than others due to their ability to manufacture, distribute, and manage inventory better than the others. Right now, there are two companies like that in this industy, and I think you know who they are!!

Joel, fact p166 and p200 dropped almost 50% and margins went up.
fact...IDC and dataquest indicate that pc industry is 18% this qtr, which is blistering at this volume.
fact, virtually everyone says that forget Japan's weakness, Europe has woke up and will carry the next 12 months.
Fact, long distance rates, internet, cellular, pagers, all telphony
has dropped bilions and billions out of the I/S director budget and they are increasing budgets in the technology area to keep
their budgets tight, but, listen to what i said...
fact...if an I/S director cuts 2 million our of long distance rates, pagers, cellular and etc. that director can spend 6 million
dollars on enabling technology and yet his monthly budget is EXACTLY THE SAME... let me tell you...telephony traditional expenses are collapsing and we are spending tht savings on enabling technologies.
How can it be done...easy... I'm down to 6 cts a minute on long distance rates for the compnay. that was a 60% cut in rates for 13 months. and pagers are down 40%, and the local service Southwestern bell was reduced 30-40%.... I do small company technology turn arounds...that allowed me to spend about 1 million and keep budgets flat.
The bigger compnaies are saving 10-30 million on rates in telephony
which means they spend 30 to 90 million and their budget doesn't go up.
We are spending the money on what you say isn't going to grow.
SO, I REELED OFF FACTS FACTS, ....you haven't said any fact.
Okay, now i want a chocolate sunday..whip cream, hot fudge, nuts, and put cherry on top<gggggg>
Do you really need a graduate degree to manage a Dairy Queen????

You are just going on and on talking nonsense on this thread!!!
Of course the current market fo sub $1000 PC will be saturated someday
if:
1) No population growth .
I do not think this will happen unless earth collide with
planet from outer space.
2) Those sub $1000 pcs sold will last forever physically.
Just tell me how many cars you have bought in your life?
3) No new softwares comes to the market which will need more
powerful computers which will make current sub $1000 users upgrade
their computers or buy additional more powerful computers.

I do not think this will happen. Just see MSFT release more
complex programs every couple of years which needs powerful
computers, and more applications need powerful computers is comming every year. So the PC market will expand instead of shrinking.
and the next couple of years will expand even faster.

Besides those above, CPQ's business is not limitted to PCs
anymore. Just visit Las Vegas on Nov. 17th, you will know !!!!

So, you were just talking nonsense on this thread which did not
show any base at all !!!
