I have always assumed elected officials know as much or more about issues than the average American citizen, so if I'm right, why in the world would McCain support the rebels who are committing murder?

Because we committed ourselves to support them, so now they're our murderous thugs. Remember, this kind of barbarity, esp. against foreigners, is nothing out of the ordinary in the Arab world.
