3Com To Unveil CoreBuilder 9000 New Generation Switch

Dow Jones Newswires

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- 3Com Corp. (COMS) will unveil on Monday its CoreBuilder 9000, a high-performance Layer 3 switch for corporate network backbone or wiring closet use.

The Santa Clara, Calif., networking company plans to begin shipping the new generation product in April, with a gigabit-speed configuration to ship in June, a spokesman said.

3Com said the CoreBuilder 9000 will support ATM, or asynchronous transfer mode, and Ethernet network installations. The switch has the capacity to transfer 56 million packets per second and handle up to 126 gigabit Ethernet ports, or connections.

Prices for the CoreBuilder 9000's ATM chassis start at $41,000. Prices for the gigabit Ethernet chassis start at $35,000, the company said.
