Marden, Cisco tried to buy CSCC but they were turned down. Cisco was pissed because they had helped CSCC get started, Cisco was'nt "smart" and stayed away. They had to settle for second best and buy Stratacom. Cisco was also eyeballing Ascend until they bought CSCC and killed any chance of a Cisco buy(overlap w/ Stratacom). The Merger wasn't only a smart move to get end-to-end Wan portfolio but also a defensive move by both companies to remain independent. I don't believe a merger or buyout of Ascend is anywhere in the picture, unless it's hostile, which would be the best for the shareholders anyway.
