William,

It might depend on your broker and the way the account was set up. I have an IRA with Fidelity and I have purchased and sold puts. In my particular case I bought the puts at the same time as the stock as protection against a possible decline - but that didn't matter to Fidelity.

William, In my IRA account, I'm allowed to buy Calls and Puts in short-term Options as well as in LEAPs; allowed to write Calls on my stocks; but not allowed to write Puts and also not allowed to use margin.
