The cost of climate control is minor ElM. < Full costs of the cold climates costly life support systems will make northern countries un-economic and uncompetitive.>

We served time in Ottawa, which had a high of -19 degrees Celsius one week we were there and a low of -32 degrees Celsius. We had constant snow on the ground for 6 months and sporadic snow for another 3 months. We did not dream of white Xmas, we got it each time, like it or not.

For hundreds of years, those freezing climates have suited some people. In fact, economically, we were better off in Ottawa than anywhere else. We left to live among family and friends and for more warmth rather than for economics which took a big hit when quitting to go back to New Zealand.

When reglaciation arrives, it will be a different matter. Driving through tunnels under a kilometre of ice won't be much of a way of life. When snow is permanently on the ground, hordes of people will leave to head south.

With good building construction and insulation, and dewaxed diesel, the cost of heat isn't too high. In fact, we were warmer in Canada than in NZ and London where insulation is not an art form and buildings are mostly unheated.

I could go whole days and only know how cold it was during a 30 metre walk across a carpark to the office. Our underground carpark at the apartment building meant driving in and out with no contact with air. If wet, my hair would freeze solid before getting inside the office building.
