That is a very good question. I think that the keys concept are: 1) fungibility, and 2) consumability.

Frungibility implies an active market - a liquid market - a market in which the value of things are easily recognized. Paper shares of CNQ, PTEN or CHK may be valuable - in the old coordinate system - but may only be so much paper after the SHTF. Much better to convert that into bottled gas, or kerosene - consumables which will keep you warm. Everybody wants to keep warm.
