1. Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. 2. Although the disease is not known to be common in Washington State, patients exhibiting symptoms similar to those of Lyme disease are frequent visitors to physicians' offices. 3. Current serologic tests for Lyme disease are of limited utility for diagnosing Lyme disease. Lyme disease is, therefore, primarily a clinical diagnosis, which can be challenging due to the protean manifestations of the disease. 4. There is a great deal of public concern about the disease and health care providers are frequently asked about it. Lyme disease is reportable in Washington State. I would think its rarity in BC is not the issue. It could be there, and at the end of the day that is what counts. It is not common in Geraldton, Ontario either, but it does occur, so a physician should watch out for it. Canada is famous for underdiagnosis of Lyme infection. Dying is easy in Canada. Getting medical attention is hard. EC<:-}
