I see an analogy to mathematics here: Q: Why aren't we allowed to divide by 0? A: Because (among other reasons) if we allow it then you can construct a mathematical proof that shows that 1=2. Q: Why shouldn't we mix church and state? A: Because when you do you can construct absurd arguments (as Lawrence O'Donnel did) like the story of the widow who gave everything can inform us about what proper Federal Tax rates should be. It leads to a break down of the logical underpinnings of the system which leads first to anarchy, then to tyranny.
