Israel is a very small country in a sea of enemies. Contrary to leftist dogma, the enmity didn't start because Israel was mean to Palestinians or any other Arabs, but because Arabs can't stand non-Arabs to rule anywhere in the Mideast. Ask the next Kurd you meet about that. Some of the enemies grudgingly accept that Israel isn't going away; others openly proclaim their intention to finish the job Hitler started. Thirty years ago everybody knew this, but the Left has learned to ignore this in the course of its love affair with the enemies of the West. The rule for living peaceably with Israel is simple: you leave Israel alone, they leave you alone. When's the last time Israel attacked Jordan or Egypt? But you send suicide bombers or 10,000 rockets, eventually you will get repaid with interest. That's because Israel wants to stay alive, which is what today's Left really objects to. Last year, the Left was calling on Israel to make major unilateral concessions because the I/P conflict was the lynch-pin of change in the Middle East and no reform anywhere in the Arab world could happen without it. Since the Arab Spring has rendered this line inoperative, the Left now calls on Israel to make major unilateral concessions because vast change is sweeping the region. Opposite situation, same recomendation - because to the Left, Israel is always at fault and must pay - until it gets turned into an Arab country and the peace of the grave can descend upon hated Zionism. The Left will ignore any messy after-effects the same way they ignored the exodus of a million boat people after the fall of South Vietnam to Communism. Not their problem.
