PW, I do that [as you know] by hitting F1 during boot and setting the second HD system partition as the one to boot from. [after I've restored to it]

If that can be done when both partitions are on the same drive, that would be of interest to those having only one HD and worried about restorability.

Interesting thought, to change which partition is "active." I don't know how it is in Windows 7 but in XP I believe one would need to edit the boot.ini file. Here is mine:

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=10
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT

[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="XXCLONE: (Cloned Volume) [d:0,p:1] \WINNT" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

You can see that it states the machine should boot from the first partition on the hard drive. This file would need to be edited to tell XP that it should boot from partition 2, but how to edit this file before the operating system is loaded?

Don't be dismayed at other stuff in my file as I routinely use XXCLONE to clone my C: partition to the 2nd hard drive mounted in the case to which I can switch with a simple trip to the BIOS configuration utility.
