The whole issue of IRA conversion is a major focus of estate planning. A large traditional IRA left as an inheritance can be a real challenge for your kids in two ways. The first is it can put you over the threshold limit - not usually a problem if the exclusion stays at $5 million (don't bet on it). And then there is the state estate tax - in Ohio it is brutal - so many elders relocate to Florida. The next problem is that it is ordinary income to your inheritors - but they can stretch it out.

Ah - but there are ways to beat it - eg life insurance.

The whole game is a pain in the butt.

Bob

I don't trust politicians, they are running out of revenue sources and are so hungry to stay in power that I bet they start taxing Roth IRAs in the future. I'll take my tax break now
