JOHN, The viral replication was described in the Science link: "Despite this optimism, new work from Fauci's laboratory--soon to be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences--will sound yet another cautionary note. Fauci's group found the same hidden reservoirs as the Siliciano and Richman teams, but also uncovered evidence suggesting that some of the hidden virus may not be latent, but still replicating at a slow rate." As long as there is replicating virus, there will be mutations (Reverse Transcriptase doesn't have the best fidelity figures) and there will be selection for mutations that make HIV resistant to PIs. Its all rather simple Biology. As far as LGND is concerned, I expect them to do very well. They have one of the best pipelines, if not the best, in Biotechnology, and the mega-deal with LLY provides adequate funding through 1999, when they expect to be profitable.
