kollmhn, i know i am jumping into your 401k/ira to roth conversion thread after it is essentially over, but i might have missed some of the flurry of posts on the subject. as i understand it you have not yet moved the money from the 401k/ira to the roth ira yet. you plan to do it, but you have not done it yet. right so far?

i did start a (one and only one) roth ira in 2010, moved a big money chunk from my ira to my roth ira, and paid all the ordinary income/amt tax in tax year 2010 rather than spread the tax out. i think i am happy about it so far.

with myself i have been debating moving the entire ira over to my roth ira and paying the fat amt taxes instead of waiting, and i think this is what you are planning too. i have been toying with the idea of waiting until the results of the 2012 election to decide, and i do not think there is any tax advantage of moving sooner than that. is there? the medicare tax you have written about is certainly a reason to do it before tax year 2012 is over, i.e, not waiting until tax year 2013.

i suppose the short of my question of you is have i understood what you are planning to do with your ira to roth ira conversion? is there a reason to convert everything to the roth before the end of tax year 2012? i hope these are not too dumb guy questions.
