The explanations in brackets are not for you, but are for those unfamiliar with the acronyms.

As TPI has increased, so has TMR decreased.
But the diminishing signal strength [head output voltage] that
results from narrower heads [higher TPI] imposes SNR [signal to
noise ratio] limitations. The GMR head delivers higher output
for a given track width and so allows higher TPI. But - as you
suggested - eventually TPI runs into the limitation imposed
by TMR [mechanical tolerances]. For MR and GMR heads the read and
write functions are performed by separate elements. So one can
write WIDE and READ narrow - to get away from ther need to position the read element exactly in the center of the written track.

The short answer is: GMR allows higher TPI.
