All:

Got the EC demo running last night.

It was bombing out earlier when it asked if I wanted to install the included Unimodem V (?) and I answered Yes. Answering No the next time let me finish the install.

Overall, I like this product quite a bit. And, yes, it's a bit more complicated than what I'd envisioned. Still think it took too long assuming competent programmers, but it also is a lot more than the bare-bones example I could've written in a week or so.

It's still in need of some bug-fixing and refinement. Wish it would've gone through a beta phase like BD did. For example, when I configured it to send 99 frames to my email address, it locked up, even though I gave it several minutes just in case it was a slow process. Worked fine with the default 6 frames, though. I sat perfectly still in front of the camera for a while (with the sensitivity cranked way down), then when I moved, it promptly emailed me 6 frames following the activity. It can only take 2-digit input into this field. 6 frames is pretty useless, I think (can see someone but not what they're doing) and I'd rather see a limit in the thousands of frames (some of us have plenty of drive space available).

A refinement I'd dearly love to see is an option to run an "other" task when it's triggered. Apparently it can call voice, send a fax, send an email, and/or sound a WAV file when it's triggered. If there were an option to make it call a user-specified program or batch file, I'd be able to have a ton of fun with it. For example, have it call up a batch file that calls a program that turns on some lights or something. There are programs out there that can be used for running external devices such as lights.

We live way out in the country, and we've thought quite a bit about the fact that we're very isolated and somewhat vulnerable because of it.

I'm going to check to see if it's possible for this program to monitor multiple cameras, and if hardware exists relatively inexpensively to allow a bunch of them to connect to a single PC. On the other hand, it'd be possible to use multiple machines to do the job, but I get the feeling it takes quite a bit of horsepower for this thing to work effectively.

Maybe EC can be the catalyst for growth in the PC cam market? Would be nice to see inexpensive multi-cam outfits coming out that're compatible with EC and vice-versa. I can see this potentially becoming a major player in home security. With other things springing up around it, like companies to whom EC will direct its calls and emails so a human can check out what the camera caught and decide whether or not authorities need to be notified.

Played correctly, it's my opinion this program very well *could* be on of the home runs SYCR's been looking for.

BTW, the barking dog WAV that comes with it is a joke. Sounds like a Pomeranian. Glad you can use any WAV you want. I think a snarling bunch of Dobies clawing at the door would be a much more effective deterrant. That or a shotgun getting a shell chambered just as the floodlights come on, followed by a blast and another shell getting chambered. :)

P.S. I could have a TON of fun with this thing if it could call a batch file. There's another possibility: a market in which people like myself write different things that EC could trigger. Having the program call a user-defined program or batch file is a feature that could be added in an afternoon. :)
