Toby, being the long term investor that I am, I am still holding a moderate amount of SDLI. After the successful last quarter, I expect to see improved revenues and earnings over the next couple of quarters, because new manufacturing abilities are coming on line, along with some pretty good contracts. Also, the price/sales ratio is quite cheap compared to high flyers like unph or mrvc.wj

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- SDL, Inc. (NASDAQ:SDLI) has
acquired all the outstanding shares of Mr. Laser, Inc., a privately held
company located in San Jose, California. Mr. Laser, Inc. has developed a
compact laser marking system based on SDL's recently introduced fiber laser.
Donald R. Scifres, chairman and chief executive officer stated, "Mr.
Laser. Inc. leverages SDL's fiber optic and fiber laser product lines, which
were originally developed to address communications markets, into the
estimated $800 million laser materials processing and marking systems market.
Mr. Laser's products are designed to specifically address applications such as
writing on semiconductor packages, semiconductor wafers, ceramics, glass,
plastics, metals, cardboard and wood. Mr. Laser brings to SDL the software
and beam scanning technology required to address these new markets. The new
Mr. Laser system is about one-third the size of present competing laser
marking systems and sells for a fraction of the competitive price. Its size
and price advantages arise in part from the unique design of the SDL fiber
laser. The combination of fiber optic and laser scanning technologies
reinforces our strategic view that fiber optics represents a key to many
future high dollar value growth opportunities."
The total purchase price for shares purchased and related transaction
costs is approximately $1.2 million. The acquisition will result in a
one-time write-off which will range from $600,000 to $900,000 for in-process
research and development for SDL in Q4 1997. All operations of Mr. Laser,
Inc. will be integrated into SDL's Systems Group. The existing management
team of Mr. Laser, Inc. is remaining with the company.

More SDLI products...

===================================================================
SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- SDL, Inc. (NASDAQ:SDLI) has
started production of a new high power 1550 nm distributed feedback laser
diode for use in high capacity, long haul communication links. These links
demand lasers with very high power and reliability to transport voice, data
and video services between regional distribution facilities. SDL's new laser
will deliver optical power in excess of 30 mW combined with excellent noise
performance. The new laser is designed for use with external modulators in
cable television and telephony networks. In many of these networks, high
optical power and low optical loss in the fiber combine to dramatically reduce
the cost per subscriber. Low noise performance from the laser is required for
low signal distortion when transmitting video signals across long distances.
High power 1550 nm transmission systems continue to maintain a clear cost
and performance advantage in broadband distribution networks because of the
low optical loss of fibers and the widespread use of optical amplifiers in
this wavelength range. According to Gregory P. Doughtery, Vice President of
Communications and Information Products, "The introduction of this product
leverages SDL's strong market position in 980 nm pump lasers, since both
products are key elements in transmitters based on erbium doped fiber
amplifiers. It also marks SDL's first of many planned source laser offerings.
We will continue to build off of our competencies in high power devices and
stable packaging."
SDL has completed preliminary reliability qualification and is currently
delivering evaluation units to key OEM customers.
