The torture inflicted on Louis was not, for the most part, intended to obtain information; it was designed solely to cause agony.

As an aside, there were numerous instances cited within the book where information WAS obtained from others. However, even these successful rough interrogations were not as well-designed as those used by the CIA in the early '00s.
