One more idea - have you ever tried the new Windows 7 system tool Resource Monitor (resmon) to trace the disk activity? It's a neat way to track down which process is causing what, regarding CPU, RAM, disk and network usage. Since you like screencasts here's one I happened to find:

Windows 7 Screencast - Resource Monitor (resmon)

One day I also had a lot of disk activity on me Lenovo ThinkPad W510 (which I still like a lot). In my case I found out that it was the Microsoft Windows Search Indexer. It did its job for a number of hours, then the disk access went back to normal.

Good luck!
