"He had several chances to get out of it with minimal losses, but was foolish enough to try a bluff. Scary dude." Couldn't agree more - especially since part of his scariness relates to the fact that he cares little about his own countrymen, including those in the army who are so much cannon fodder to him. As long as his Republican Guards are relatively intact and most especially the elite, most trusted troops nearest him remain a viable force, he knows that he'll remain in place because the alternatives are much worse.

Only he can keep the Iranians from overunning the oil fields owned by Iraq, Kuwait and the other Gulf States. And he keeps the indigenous Kurds out of the whey, er way (couldn't resist the bad pun!), so that they don't foment trouble in Iraq, Turkey and Iran.

What a tangled mess that is - which is why Israel didn't serve a nuke on his head during the Gulf War, even after he Scud-bombed their cities. They've said they won't be restrained if he pulls anything again.
