Do you work for an oil company?

No. Also is an irrelevant question, but I'll humor you with some answers for now despite the fact your engaging in implied ad hominem rather than actually making relevant arguments.

Are you only interested in the next two years or so?

The oil won't even be out of the ground two years from now. This is an issue over decades not two years. And even if it was just for the next two years 1 - Why not make the next two years marginally better? and 2 - If we reduce oil use from other sources for two years then they will last a little bit longer.

If the issue was no drilling there for a decade, and then it 100%, without any doubt, it would be allowed and so would other currently off limits , that might be acceptable. Leaving a lot of value untouched forever without good reason, not so much.

Do you ever think beyond a couple of years and beyond someones immediate profits?

All the time. Including on this issue, and with the statements I've made in this conversation.

Do profits take precedence over the common good?

Getting tens of billions to trillions of dollars of a valuable product on the market is an example of the common good, as profits often are as long as they are not the result of rent-seeking.

5 billion barrels is a drop in the bucket as regards oil reserves...

That argument is meaningless. $100 is a drop in the bucket of my personal finances, but I'm not going to leave it lying around it I can get it. "Its not going to save the world" doesn't imply "its not a good idea".
