Key Tronic's Secure Products Provide Ultimate Safeguard For Network And Portable Computer Access

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 1997--Integrated Finger-Scanner Keyboard Protects Any PC With a Fingerprint, Not a Password

Key Tronic Corporation (NASDAQ:KTCC), a world leader in keyboard and input device technology, today announced the availability of bundled solutions from the Secure product line, which utilizes nature's own identification system -- the fingerprint -- to ensure secure authorized access to computer files.

Key Tronic today also introduced the Secure Keyboard Finger Image scanner, a 104-key Windows-95 compatible keyboard with the high-resolution scanner built in, eliminating the need for a separate peripheral. The streamlined Secure Keyboard Finger Image scanner allows any Windows-based system to benefit from the protection offered by finger imaging.

Current networks and computer systems that use password and PIN technologies are still vulnerable to fraud and hacking. Unauthorized access can be significantly reduced through the positive identification provided by finger-imaging, greatly improving security, making it the most efficient and reliable solution in network and computer protection.

The Secure product family includes finger-imaging scanners, frame grabbers, supporting hardware components and packaged software solutions. As of today, the scanners are available as stand-alone or incorporated keyboard units. The scanners feature state-of-the-art optics with miniature high-resolution cameras to record and read fingerprints as analog video signals. The accompanying frame grabbers, available as either a peripheral device or a PC card for portable systems, capture these signals and convert them into digital information that can be processed by the computer to lock out unauthorized users.

"Computer security impacts everyone, from the enterprise customer concerned about sensitive corporate files, to the consumer who demands secure banking transactions," said Tom Parrish, director of sales and marketing, Key Tronic. "The Secure family transforms any Windows-based PC into an unbeatable security system, and does so at an exceptionally reasonable price."

The supporting software, developed by the National Registry Inc. (NRI), an authority in fingerprint imaging software, includes a unique Microsoft(R) Windows 95-based, finger-image enabled screen-saver that prevents files from being accessed when a user is away from the computer. Once the screen saver has been activated, any attempt to access the computer generates a prompt for the user to place his or her finger on the scanner. Within seconds, the system verifies the fingerprint against previously enrolled images to identify the user and grant or deny access. The Secure family also utilizes Secure Authentication Facility for Microsoft Windows NT (SAF/NT) that complements and enhances Windows NT's built-in password-based log-on security process.
