Re: Rocky's post on Orb

Rocky,

I'm sorry to be redundant here, but I can't resist.

Why would you think Orb will cut into Jaz sales and not cut into Syquest's? Again, what you are missing here is that you are assuming that Iomega will never lower the price of their discs and drives. This is not going to happen. Iomega will lower their prices as they have successfully attained economies of scale, producing millions and millions of both drives and discs due to CUSTOMER DEMAND. Then, why would anyone in their right mind buy a Syquest or Orb?

Regarding the Orb's press release specifically regarding MTF, this is an idiotic argument. 250K hours is 28 years. Oh no!!! Orb's MTF is 33 years.

Do you really think anyone will be using Jaz or Orb in 30 years?

No. By then they'll be using Jaz 10. Castlewood and Syquest will have been out of business for 29 years by then.

And, you'll be penniless, after making more and more bad investment decisions.

And, since you'll have no more money, we won't have to endure your stupidity on this thread anymore.

I actually have changed my mind about your presence on the thread. You provide lots of comic relief and I appreciate that.

Any other stupid comments you'd like to add?

Rocky, If you remember back in 1989 - 1991 allot of Windows bashing, people, computer magazine columnists, etc..... were saying OS/2 is going to give Windows a hard time. I even remember some of these experts saying Windows would lose the desktop operating system base.

What happened??? What operating system do almost all new computers come with??? Who's products did I support all those years........MICROSOFT.

If Iomega does it right, I can see ZIP's, CLIK's everywhere. CLIK could replace 35mm film in the future. They seem to be wizards at marketing.....and I still personally believe ZIP will be the next "FLOPPY."

I bought Microsoft operating system products for the last ten years, and now I am buying Iomega products. ZIP, CLIK, RECORD-IT...get me very excited. I Love My Zip&#153...and all the STUFF they hold.

I just read the release on the Orb Drive and Cartridge. The stats given would be more impressive if the gadgets were on the market now and checked out. If they can really improve on speed by 33% over Jaz, and lifetime by 20% over Jaz, at 50% of the price they may really be something. But since they aren't, they might be more vaporware lost in the fog looking forever for an established base.

There were a couple of things in the release that deserve specific critical comment:

"The Orb, which draws 5 volts of power,..."

One wonders at the technical expertize of an editor or writer for a tech company that would rever to "volts" as "power", since the unit of power is the WATT, and leave the issue of whether a five volt or five watt value is correct.

"The Orb is also rated for longer life, at 300,000 hours of
mean time before failure, as opposed to Jaz's 250,000 hours,
according to CastleWood officials."

Rated by whom? Them? Hardly relevant, since the Jaz figure might be low or high, and Jaz is on the market where such figures could be verified if someone went to the extreme trouble to find out.
