Morpher,

"Scientific American" has deteriorated badly to where it now
publishes junk by junkers. This is sad: In the past you could
learn new things from it. The finishing stroke for
me was an article a few years back on artificial intelligence
in which the "Turing test for Chinese" was expounded in
nauseating, condescending, and completely unscientific,
inaccurate, and (for the author) self-serving detail.

Among other things, anyone with a basic understanding of the
Turing test would know there's no such thing as a
"Turing test" for this or that specific subject. Well, enough.

Sorry to interject this note off-subject, but you struck a chord
with your comments. I haven't read the particular article
(canceled my SA subscription years ago), but your observations are
consistent with mine, and the similarities are scary (non-experts
expounding erroneously about subjects they do not understand
under the flagstaff of a once-reputable magazine). We don't need
this.
