The problem here is that he is able to deflect criticism and claim credit all at the same time (I gave them what they asked for) and nobody calls him on the whole thing. Nobody asked for a moat, they asked that the problem be fixed, specifically the immediate problem they have with the illegal boarder traffic ruining their lives. Not an unreasonable thing for citizens to ask of their government. With the moats/alligators remark he reveals himself as a bureaucrat (and a sneaky, slippery one at that). And then he misrepresents the measures to date, so he's a liar also. A leader fixes the problem, gets whatever through congress that addresses the problem and then implements it. Even then, if the solution is not adequate he doesn't pull the "hey, what'd'ya want from me? You got what you asked for, I only work here". He adjusts his response to SOLVE THE PROBLEM. Can you imagine if a couple of planes a day were getting blown out of the sky due to lax security? He'd come on TV and say, hey you wanted the TSA, you got it (wasn't my idea, why you botherin me). They don't get every terrorist (hard to completely avoid reference to those falling planes (or unemployed, to throw in a little implied analogy), but think about all the planes that didn't get blown up (all the jobs saved). They're good hard working folk who will vote for me next election. "Herb and Harriet over here, with daughter Suzy. Suzy had a brain tumor. Doctors gave her 6 weeks to live, but Herb had no insurance until he got his job with TSA. Now Suzy could get the medical care she needed and is doing fine today. Let's have a nice hand for Suzy and her parents. Wonderful family". Yeah, likely. Of course he cares about TSA, so the jokes and the brushoff tactics he used on the boarder wouldn't be stooped to, or maybe they would, he seems to have a hard time helping himself. That smug nastiness disguised as humor comes through way too often for my tastes. Really liked Mark Steyn's take on some of the presidential candidates. ARS
