I agree, AMD is no startup. My point is that AMD uses stock the way a startup does, to obtain cash to finance a marginally profitable business (at times anyway). In general AMD scrounges for cash to deploy in growing its business. Intel & MSFT seem to have given up the notion of drastically expanding their businesses, and instead have chosen to reap profits for the owners. That says something about the world view of management. Its also possible it says something about managements views of regulators, given their historical dominance in the industry.

It would be interesting to plot the rise of GOOG and APPL (stock price, revenue, profits, choose your metric) vs $ expended at INTC or MSFT for dividends, stock repurchases, and extra employee compensation.

Again, thanks for the excellent post. Most posts here (including mine) don't contain nearly the thought and work yours do. I mostly short term trade AMD now, whereas it looks like your interest is perhaps longer term investing, and having someone with that view point would be very beneficial to this board.
