My favorite fairy tale about book value:

Once upon a time, there was a company with a book value of $50 per share. Much of this book value came from their ownership of holes in mountains. They called these railroad tunnels. Unfortunately, the track in those holes in mountains was not well maintained, and not many trains ran through the holes, and when they did, they didn't carry enough paying freight. So, the Penn Central Railroad went belly-up, and the stock price approached zero, and the employees and stockholders did not live happily ever after.

The moral? Well, I'll leave that to you.
