But at a pump station in Fort Smith you can fill up for $1.07 a gallon. The pump station off Waldron and Rogers Avenue is one of three compressed natural gas pump stations in Arkansas. It belongs to AOG. "It's natural gas compressed to be used as a motor vehicle fuel," said Arkansas Oklahoma Gas Corporation president Mike Callan. To use the pump, drivers have to have a natural gas conversion in their vehicles. "The compressed natural gas tank is in the trunk and gives us approximately 200 miles a tank," Callan said. Callan said large companies such as AT&T have showed interest in the natural gas and conversion and car dealerships in the River Valley are preparing to meet demand. "Right now we can convert vehicles but it is pricey. it's $12,000 to $15,000," said Randall Ford general manager Bradford Randall. Drivers could get it for about half. An Arkansas bill that will go in effect July 1 reimburses up to $5,000. With the government incentive, companies could be paid back for the cost in a year and a half, but it may not be the best option for a family budget just yet. "It's not cost efficient for the average consumer unless you are a high mileage driver," Callan said. It would take an average family driving less than 20,000 miles a year nearly four years to see a payback, but buying a vehicle already equipped could be cheaper. Some dealers say it's already happening. "There is a lot more cost savings if it's installed in the factory as opposed to an up fit. By the end of the year they'll be on the ground and ready for sale," Randall said Read more: 4029tv.com
