Ken, sorry... was trying to make a point in a running conversation on this board where CA seems to be the favorite target of jabs and jokes esp. wrt to politics... you are right, of course and I am deeply sorry... I still have many friends in rural TN from my years there (though I still do not like the climate in SW TN, it's not the people's fault).

I've lived in many states, and in many rural areas around the midwest, northern states, mid south and now SoCal... every area has its quirks...

My comment (which I regret) was part of the continuing sport of CA bashing here... aside from all of us being called fruits and nuts, we are blamed for almost everything bad in this country it seems.

I, of all people, should not have said what I did about the rural south as I was guilty of the exact same thing wrt to the rural south as many here are wrt SoCal.

My apologies.

FWIW, where I lived in TN, we would have been able to discuss it further over a drink, but not legally as it was a dry county (with only 23,000 people) -- or more precisely, alcohol was widely available, but not legally... the locals tended to drink wet, but vote dry, letting Miss. liquor stores (only 18 miles away) reap the taxes while our county was always broke as we paid Miss. liquor taxes that could have been collected locally.

Jim

And Ken - consider that as from someone who so vehemently objects to generalizations re California.

Edit: I note Jim's recognition of the issue.

Frankly, I wonder what area of the country is not subject to stereotyping.

Bob

PS: Unemployment now in "rust belt" Ohio is now below the national average! And the city known as the mistake by the lake has the team with the best record in MLB. Go Tribe!

"In fact I tend to being grossly insulted by your remark and would be so if I were not aware of your apparent narrow mind."

See if I have this right. You say you would be grossly insulted but, you're not, because you'd prefer to call Jim somewhat intolerant or prejudiced (narrow-minded?) thereby attempting to self elevate your stature.

I'd say YOU are a bit too thin-skinned. "Phoney" come to mind, as well.

I live in the rural south - S.C. to be exact. To give an idea of how rural, the nearest WalMart is 20 miles away. I don't know if disconnected is the right word but this is definitely the best and worst place I've ever lived. The educational system is a mess but I suspect that's true in a lot of places if not everywhere. If there's a disconnect I would surmise that it's because almost everyone around here despises big government and complains about their taxes but nearly everyone seems to be employed by government or involved in farming which Uncle Sap treats pretty generously or is collecting some form of retirement or disability. They also tend to blame a lot on illegal immigration (which is really NOT a significant problem in these parts) even though they know full well that the textile jobs they used to hold got exported from under them. Go figure.
