Carter inherited the shambles left by Nixon and then Ford. Admittedly, he was a buzz kill. FDR inherited the Great Depression from Hoover, and brought the country through it, just as Obama is guiding the country through the Bush Great Recession!

FDR extended the Depression. We only pulled out of it because he had to fight foreign enemies and by the time the war was over he was dead. He would have brought back the Depression had he lived.
