Which is why they are profitable right now instead of bleeding red ink.

It is very easy to be "profitable" when you've just come through a Ch.11 in which the unions have made TEMPORARY concessions, your debt has been conveniently "restructured", your pension requirements are slashed, the government is bankrolling you, and you are coming off the worst three years in decades if not forever.

According to GM there are actually two reasons:

"GM has delivered five consecutive profitable quarters, thanks to strong customer demand for our new fuel-efficient vehicles and a competitive cost structure that allows us to leverage our strong brands around the world and focus on driving profitable automotive growth."

However, the first half of that paragraph reeks of marketing hype.

What is apparent is that UAW will take GM to the cleaners as the negotiations begin for a new contract.

Neither you nor I has access to the financial internals that would be necessary to establish with any real basis WHY the company is making money today at all. The markets certainly don't seem optimistic about the company's future.
