Interesting question ...

I have one - if I have a drive that "crashed" or I just want to get rid of, and wanted to ensure the data was not readable would everyone agree that if I physically open drive up and take a nail to the platter and scratch it across from center to outer edge, that would be sufficient? I know there are multiple platters but figure just doing one would be enough for the drive head to be deemed inoperable.

Not interested in wasting my time wiping it. I am thinking that this method would be more "guaranteed" than relying on a wipe app.

Thoughts?

FWIW: For CD/DVDs I read years ago the BEST way to destroy is to take a pair of scissors and cut it through - from the edge to the center - don't have to even cut in half. By cutting it, it makes it impossible to read it. Faster and cleaner than scratching the aluminum upper side.
