Much of HTC's phenomenal success is attributable to their exclusive reliance upon Qualcomm processors and basebands, in the presence of a smartphone market given birth by Apple. Timing and close teamwork with Paul have been huge for HTC.

Brian,

Do you admire Qualcomm's management at all for making an early and profitable investment in HTC and in partnering with HTC before HTC became so successful? Q's management also made plenty of investments in companies that weren't so successful, so we shareholders/investors need to take the good with the bad. Overall, I feel Qualcomm's management and executive teams have fared pretty well over the years (the Broadcom fiasco a notable exception) despite a tidal wave of political opposition to CDMA and the company's licensing model. I'm a bit curious if some of your dissatisfaction toward Paul Jacobs derives from the fact that he is Irwin's son...in other words, if Tony Thornley or Sanjay Jha had made the same decisions as Paul has over the last 5 or so years, would you feel the same about Tony or Sanjay? Just my 3 cents worth. --Ryhack
