A reversal of fortunes in Lordstown, Ohio

By Steve Benen

As part of the coverage of the comeback of the American auto manufacturing industry, it was good to see this report on CBS News last night:

Watch video

If you can’t watch clips from your work computers, the segment shows a GM plant in Lordstown, Ohio, where thousands of workers were being laid off two years ago, and where thousands of workers are now being hired. It’s a story the Obama administration is no doubt thrilled to see, not only because of Ohio’s electoral significance, but because it’s a piece of a larger puzzle that shows the White House got the industry rescue right and Republicans got it wrong.

I especially liked the perspective of Lordstown Mayor Michael Chaffee, whose town is heavily dependent on the local GM plant, and who told CBS, “It was hard to turn a television on and see U.S. senators talking about letting the industry go away.”

Republicans, I think he’s referring to you.

national business leaders are begging Rs to pull back from their position"

This is true - the corporate money has been flowing to the (R)'s, but you've got to wonder when the corporate "people" realize they've just bought an asylum, and switch to the (D)'s.

I was surprised these business leaders went public with their concern. After all, they are typically joined at the waist with Rs. I have to assume the public announcement became necessary because Rs were not listening to their pleas said in private.
