<edit/add><Jay Bruce has been on a tear lately.>

That's putting it mildly... too bad it's mostly been wasted on losing games... he's been about the only guy producing lately...

"Jay Bruce continues to flex muscle: Cincinnati Reds OF Jay Bruce hit his National League-leading 14th home run in a loss against the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday, May 26. His shot was a two-run job, and he is batting .486 with six home runs and 14 RBIs during his eight-game hitting "

I've whined about this before on other boards, but Jay Bruce brings it up again:

The insane insistence by today's managers to alternate hitters at the plate in the heart of the lineup, i.e., the #3 hitter bats leftie so the #4 hitter must be a rightie and #5 a leftie again... or reverse that with rightie, leftie, rightie...

I understand the logic -- breaking up rightie/lefties in the heart of your order so the opposing manager can't put in a lefthanded specialist (or righthanded as appropriate) for more than one batter in crucial situations.

Herre's the thing... if Bruce (leftie) had been batting #4 behind Votto (leftie) the last couple of seasons, there'd have been a lot fewer close games where such things matter because Votto wouldn't have been walked so much (he has 10-15 more walks than any other NL player) and even if he had been, Bruce would be smacking him in...

Instead, Dusty (loved him as a player, but as manager, not so much) has been rigidly following THE RULE and sticking a deadbeat in the #4 slot, killing rallies, making it easy to pitch around Votto and meaning that many of Bruce's HRs have been solos w/out Votto on base.

Is it just me?

Jim

Speaking of being on a tear, Carl Crawford of the Red Sox, who got off to a horrendous start, has had 4 hits in consecutive games. Of the 8 hits, 5 of them have been for extra bases. A home run and two triples were among them.

And, the Red Sox have scored a minimum of 14 runs in consecutive games, one of those games against the League leading Indians.
