One of my main points is that USB, by Intel's own suggestion, is not intended for high throughput devices. Whether or not Microsoft supports USB is somewhat incidental. They do support, today, Ethernet connectivity and I doubt they'll be dropping it in favor of USB. Nor would I expect them to kill off plug-and-play. My understanding is that USB is an add-on for medium to slow devices.

On the contrary, if I was an RBOC I'd be wondering how well a USB modem will perform on a fully-loaded USB given its limited throughput and relatively untested (in the real world) performance. I'd be more inclined to look at a solutions that have tried and true performance like cards plugged directly into a PC bus or connected to an EN adapter.
