Interesting article, unbelievable that there is no mention of Ascend.

Looking at the products mentioned in Mavericks post (544 ASND- NEWS ONLY), new contracts are all very heavy w switches.

CBX-500 - ATM Switch w Frame Relay and IP Service.
B-STDX 8000/9000 - Multiservice Switch. (Frame Relay Switches)
GX-550 - Carrier class ATM Core Switch (1st OC 48/STM-16 capacity)
GRF - IP Switch (Carriers , ISP's)
DSL THT - Multi DSL Concentrator
MAX TNT - Multiprotocal WAN Access Switch.

"The most recent Vertical Systems projection suggest that the carrier and ISP ATM market will grow at about 55% annually through 2000. Ascend, Newbridge, and Cisco are all expected to gain incremental share of the market in 1997."

Carrier and ISP ATM Market Shares

Company Projected 1997 Market Share %
Newbridge 33%
Cisco 22%
Nortel 11%
Ascend 8%

I think its obvious that the new and (pending)contracts all include a very large CSCC component. Should help dispel analyst's negative towards the merger.

I was wondering what kind of effect fiber channel will have on future network technologies, primarily WAN and LAN, it seems there are hundreds of different networking technologies and all have their merits. Lately I've read dozens of articles on Fiber Channel. I have a token investment in Ancor Communications which makes Fiber Channel switching gear and from the discussions in their thread it seems that things seem to be moving briskly, but I've yet to read any mention of it on this thread. Does anyone know if fiber channel is in the future for Ascend? Any potential mergers with companies such as Ancor Communications?
