Letterman knew it was Piper. It was in the news the day before and that day. Letterman and his staff read the news and watch it to come up with current things to joke about. Heck I think it was in the news many days before, saying how palin was going to NY with her younger daughter

And he apologized. He got off light, but that happens. "But they ought to treat her the same way they treat liberal women." Look, she was a prospective VP. She couldn't name a newspaper she has read, later amended that to all of them. She couldn't name her favorite Founding Father, claimed all of them again. Just to name two. Not only was it clear she was totally unprepared, she made no visible effort to get prepared. She just tried to bluff her way through the process. I've never watched Chris Matthews so I don't know what you are talking about. It is certainly possible that he went over the line. But the media in general tried to get straight information from Palin and after watching her duck, dodge, bob, obfuscate and out right lie, they started to dig. What she did was the equivalent of what Gary Hart when he dared the press to dig up dirt. And he got crucified far worse than Palin ever did. And he deserved it.
