I think you forget that the iPhone, the first truly successful smartphone, was EDGE-only.

Rimm didn't adapt either, wasn't the real Internet on screen. And IPhone Edge was just the beginning. Smart devices popularity have greatly increased with speed. EVDO easily beat Wcdma to market, and with Europes help could have had an even larger lead and global penetration. If Nokia had had a device already in place with Evdo speeds and CDMA networks globally Apple probably would not have tried the market as a late entry. Even so Nokia would have beaten them to market with huge advantages of scale in place, and they would be the smart device darling.
