Re: Maxtor

You said:
To All: Any info on Maxtor? I am somewhat concerned over Maxtor's advertised prices, they seem quite cheap and the prices have dropped since last week.

Well, that's a very general question. What kind of info are you looking for? As an nonpublic subsidiary of a foreign company, information is not as available on Maxtor.

Here's what I know about them off the top of my head:
1. I owned it (Maxtor stock) before they were bought by Hyundai.
2. They've lost money forever.
3. They've recently made a big push into the desktop market, and taken market share away from everybody with their CrystalMax and now DiamondMax products, which are IMHO well regarded in the marketplace.
4. They have competitive technology, warranties, and customer support policies. In fact they have a reputation for easy support -- some computer consultants I know use Maxtor routinely since they have a fast, no questions asked return policy.
5. It's RUMORED that Hyundai is looking to spin them off again.
6. The old CFO of Maxtor has resurfaced at S3. In the last S3 conference call the guy sounded like a complete moron. IMHO.
7. They are a customer of RDRT.
8. They are very price competitive in the markets in which they participate. The last disk I personally bought was a Maxtor 4.2G. I own quite a few and have had no problems.

Sheba, Best Buy is advertising Maxtor Ultra DMA drives as follows:

5.1 gig; $279.00 after rebate

8.4 gig; $399.00 after rebate.

I think for Ultra drives, these prices are terrific and Western Digital doesn't have any Ultra drives available that I can see in the adds. I just bought a Maxtor Ultra DMA 5.1 and look forward to the big jump in hard disk space on my main computer. You have to upgrade the I/O board to get the Ultra DMA capability, but it is backwards compatible to EIDE. The price is very close to an EIDE anyhow, so why not get the better technology?

Comp USA has the Maxtor 3.5 gig EIDE for $179.00; very nice price there also.

I own WDC, but I have been watching Maxtor advertising against WDC's and I have to wonder why anyone would pay more for less?
