GSM/GPRS/EDGE cell phone will be like "Motorola's analog "brick" cellphone in the next 5 to 10 years if not sooner. GSM side never considered these GPRS/EDGE networks as a long term solution in the first place. You and I knew the history. Moto's analog phone plus Moto's alpha-numermic text paging can do just as well without GSM/GPRS/EDGE and all CDMA networks combined if the technological advancements stop right at 1G time plus all the items I listed earlier. So if technology kept advancing, GPRS/EDGE/CDMA networks in the future will be as useless as our debate right now. :-)
