You would have to admit that "times were good" under Bush when you called for austerity." There you go again, Tenchu. In your zeal for a gotcha, you obviously didn't understand my posts. I never said things weren't good under Bush. Just that, with the amount of deficit spending going on, things should have been better. "But it's natural to accuse others of wanting that?" The accusation was come about reluctantly. Only because the alternative explanations reflect even worse. It is clear and obvious that austerity measures during a recovery runs the risk, if not the certainty, of tanking the economy. There are too many examples of this to ignore, the most recent would be Britain and Ireland. There are no examples of economies improving because of it. Now granted, you could argue that it will work out in the long term, but there is no proof that has ever happened. "All to defend permanently bigger government in the name of Keynesian economics. " Tenchu, it works and there is plenty of proof. There is no proof that what you advocate works in anything but the short term. And there is plenty of proof that a small government, hands off the economy approach leads to a boom/bust cycle that wips out the middle class and causes wealth to accumulate at the top because they are the only ones in a position to take advantage during the bust. We have literally centuries of data. Now you can argue that it is Really Different This Time. But you need to come up with something like proof instead of just waving your hands... Now it may be that your ideology is so important to you that the negative effects are worth it to maintain purity. Me, I prefer a much more pragmatic approach. "And even Clinton didn't dare raise taxes during the boom." I guess you have forgotten, or choose to ignore, the Clinton tax increase that was going to crash the economy... It cost the Democrats control in 1994. And, of course, the Republicans weren't going to raise taxes after that.
