"Go back to 1981. The federal government is spending $678 billion per year. Now its over three trillion a year more than that, and most of that increase is not interest on the debt."

Tim, most of the debt that we now have is because of deficit spending. Deficit spending increased dramatically because of administrations that engaged in tax cuts and the largest peacetime military buildup in history by any metric you choose to use. We probably could have had one or the other, but both accounted for the majority of the debt.
